Am I overweight, Doc?

October 19th, 2012 by Live Well Omaha Kids

According to a recent Douglas County survey only 25% of overweight adults were counseled by their medical provider to take action. Why aren’t doctors and other providers talking about this issue? Well, it can be a sensitive topic. We do know that patients trust their medical provider more than about any other source. That’s why Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Alegent Creighton Health and Children’s Hospital are all teaming up on a grant to train 400 medical providers in our community to have these types of conversations and to chart Body Mass Index (BMI) as well as promote breastfeeding in their practice. Recent forecasts show that if 90% of US families exclusively breastfeed their infant for up to six months, more than $13 billion in health care costs of infants and mothers would be saved.
