Bringing My Family Back to the Table

Life has a way of pulling you in many different directions. And until recently, the quality time my family and I were spending together was suffering because we were so over-taxed with what life was throwing us.

When I was a little girl, I recall fondly the conversations my family and I had around the dinner table. In fact, that’s where we spent some of our best quality family time together. We had dinner nearly every night at home and always around our dinner table. Going out to eat was very rare for us and my Mom would never think of letting us eat in the family room in front of the television.  We had a proper dinner at the table and the conversations were lively and plentiful.

These days my family and I are always on the go and sadly it was taking an act of God to get us all seated at the same table. I hate to admit it, but we had started eating out a lot and it was not uncommon for me to allow my two little boys to eat in front of the television. You know it’s bad when your kids start commenting on the fact that we hardly ever ate at our dinner table.

So, when Kat 103.7 and our sister stations KFAB, KGOR, 96.1 KISS F.M. and The Wolf teamed up with Live Well Omaha for the “Family Conversations around the Dinner Table,” message, I decided it was time to bring my family back to the dinner table.

What I realized is I didn’t have to be Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray for dinner to work for us.  As long as we were making the effort to eat as a family and tried to include healthy options dinner could be as simple as grilled cheese sandwiches, fruit and carrots.

I can’t tell you how much the communication has improved in my house.  It’s been a delightful adventure each night dining with my husband and children and we’ve benefitted by eating healthier options too. Parker and Grant

Here are some questions I like to ask my boys Parker and Grant at the dinner table….

  • What was the best part of your day?
  • Who did you play with at recess?
  • What’s your favorite toy?
  • If you were an animal, which animal would you be?
  • What’s your favorite book?
  • If you found some money on the ground what would you do?
  • What’s your favorite holiday?

I hope you’ll be inspired to bring your family back to the dinner table.

Kat 103.7 and our sister stations KFAB, KGOR, 96.1 KISS FM and The Wolf  have teamed up with our friends at Live Well Omaha Kids for the “Live Well Family Conversations,” public service campaign. With the resources available on this website, we are encouraging families to eat more meals together at the dining room table. The PSA campaign features real families and their conversations around their dinner table. Take the pledge to cook and eat family meals at home together by clicking here.
