Charles Drew Health Center EARN-A-BIKE PROJECT

April 7th, 2014 by Live Well Omaha Kids

Written by Kay Grant, Healthy Families Program Coordinator, CHI Health

Summer always makes me think about my younger years when my sister and I rode our bikes up and down our street all day long. While we were stationed in Europe and got older, bikes were less for recreation, and more for getting to school, the grocery store with mom, and other errands. Every kid deserves happy bike memories to look back on.

As an adult, I really enjoy riding my bike both for recreation and shopping/commuting. As Omaha is becoming (slowly but surely) more bike friendly, we need to not only get more kids on bikes, but teach them how to share the road safely with pedestrians and other vehicles.

For the second year in a row, Live Well Omaha Kids and other community partners is collaborating with Charles Drew Health Center to get brand new bikes, locks and helmets for 50 kids who do some community service, and attend a health fair on June 7th that includes lessons on the importance of physical activity, making healthy food choices, and bike safety and maintenance. Kids have the chance to help their neighbors, get out into the community, earn a free bike and learn how to enjoy it safely. Win, spin, and win!

The event starts this week with the PROJECT KICK-OFF at the Charles Drew Health Center on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 6pm or Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 6pm. You will receive information about the program as well as the application. Between then and May 7th, you’ll have the chance to EARN POINTS with community service and bike activities. COMPLETED APPLICATIONS are due at the Charles Drew Health Center by 5pm on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. If you’ve been selected to receive a NEW BIKE, you’ll be notified and must attend the BIG EVENT on Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 9am-1pm at the Charles Drew Health Center.
