Go Nebraska Kids is comprised of community members, organizations, teachers, medical providers, and families who strive to help Nebraska kids be healthy, particularly through the promotion of the 5-4-3-2-1 Go!® Healthy Kids Countdown. For the betterment of kids, Go Nebraska Kids is always searching for ways to work collaboratively and support other initiatives across the state working to promote health to children and families. Action for Healthy Kids provided an opportunity to do just that during Every Kid Healthy Week!

Schools across the United States celebrated Every Kid Healthy Week by participating in various healthy activities during the week of April 24-28, 2017. In partnership with Action for Healthy Kids, Go Nebraska Kids also challenged schools to a week of 5-4-3-2-1 Go!® fun! Schools were encouraged to plan activities around the Healthy Kids Countdown in order to earn healthy incentives. The more challenges a school completed, the larger the incentive. For example, participating in one challenge allowed a school to be eligible for two Igloo 5 Gallon Water coolers ($80 value), but if a school completed 5 challenges plus a school-wide challenge, they were eligible for up to $400 to be spent on healthy, sustainable items of their choice!

Participating schools during this year’s Every Kid Healthy Week included Neihardt Elementary, St. Margaret Mary Catholic School, Liberty Elementary, Boyd Elementary, Conestoga Elementary, Schuyler Elementary, Joslyn Elementary, and Bancroft Elementary. These schools completed many challenges,
such as the following:

  • Morning announcements around each number of the 5-4-3-2-1 Go!® countdown
  • School-wide walk
  • Blood Drive
  • Posting healthy recipes on the school’s social media sites
  • Email parents each day during the week on the health topic for each day
  • Water at desks
  • Classroom charades
  • Hand washing challenge
  • School-wide dance session
  • Family Fitness Night

Thanks to the great participation of these schools during Every Kid Healthy Week, more than 4,600 kids were able to participate in the 5-4- 3-2- 1 Go!® fun!!
