Several Omaha, Council Bluffs, and Lincoln Hy-Vee locations will host a community-wide, Shopping Matters day and together they aim to reach 200 participants. Live Well Omaha Kids is helping promote this great event and is funding incentives for the tours along with partner Hunger Free Heartland.

Shopping Matters is a national Share Our Strength program that helps families make healthy and affordable choices at the supermarket. Locally, this program is conducted by the Visiting Nurse Association’s Cooking Matters team.

During the typical 90-minute Shopping Matters tours, participants practice key food shopping skills like buying fruits and vegetables on a budget, comparing unit prices, reading food labels, and identifying whole grain foods. Tours are facilitated by a wide range of local volunteers who work as dietitians, community nutrition educators, culinary professionals, Extension agents, or staff of community agencies serving families in need.

Families throughout the community have signed up to attend one of the eight tours hosted in Omaha and Council Bluffs Hy-Vee Stores this Saturday. Lincoln is also participating with two tour locations.

A previous program participant Alberto Cervantes and Hy-Vee, Registered Dietitian Rebecca Beaudoin are available to talk to media on the day of the event or by appointment. Please contact Anna Curry to schedule an interview 402-917-2291.
