Healthy Families works with many wonderful community partners to provide families with a free 8-week physical activity and nutrition education course, aimed at children and teens that have received a diagnosis of being overweight or obese from their health care provider and are ready to make a healthy behavior change.

This course teaches families how to make healthy changes for a lifetime, together. Families qualify if they have at least one child or teenager (ages 6-18) who’s Body Mass Index is in the 85th percentile or greater for age and gender.

During the program, families learn how harmful to your health that junk food and sugary drinks really are by understanding how to read nutrition labels. They also are taught to shop healthy on a budget during a grocery store tour. These two things alone have impacted how families eat differently. Families also make changes to their activity levels because they feel more energetic and really enjoy spending more time together as a family.

One family sums up their Healthy Families experience so well, “We are successful because we work as a family to plan meals and physical activities. I feel like we’re much more vested in being healthy. The shift has moved from weight to energy in/energy out.”
