Healthy Neighborhood Stores increases the sale of whole grains and fresh produce

MJ PhilsUNL Extension offers nutrition education at eight Healthy Neighborhood Stores. These Healthy Neighborhood Stores are located in Omaha neighborhoods where access to healthy foods like fresh produce, low-fat milk and lean protein are limited. These food demonstrations show store patrons that healthy foods are available and affordable and provide information, food samples and recipes. Store owners and customers have raved about the difference she is making within their communities.

“I am going to try this at home so that my son will eat more vegetables,” said one patron.

Based on store owner sales reports, there has been an increase in the sales of whole grains and fresh produce. Customers report that due to the educational food demonstrations, they are trying and buying healthy foods that they had never considered buying before. Children are also trying food samples along side their parents and parents are surprised at what their children are willing to taste and what they actually end up liking.

IMG_3137MJ, a UNL Extension Assistant, says that the most rewarding part of providing educational food demonstrations at the Healthy Neighborhood Store is when customers rush over to her demo table with a look of amazement that healthy foods could smell and look so good. But, it is really after tasting the food they are so impressed and convinced that healthy foods really taste as good as they smell and look; they immediately ask for the recipes so they can buy the ingredients to make those recipes at home for their families.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you for what you are doing,” said another store patron, “It’s about time we make changes in our community.”
