Helping families make healthy food choices

My name is Jody Fritz and I own an indoor farmers market here in town called Tomato Tomäto (located on 156th and West Center Road). We have a large variety of products and are open to the public year around. I love my store and I love what I do. The people I work with in the surrounding communities are extraordinary and the people I work with in the store, even more so.tomato-tomato-62-300x225

Owning your own business has both its advantages and disadvantages. We run a large CSA (community supported agriculture) program out of the store. It takes on the coordinating efforts of 30 different farms and 630 members. Needless to say it makes things busy. One of the struggles I have personally with my business is since our busy season is during the summer, it is hard to be home when the kids are home all the time. I struggle with not being there to make sure they are eating well and making those smart food choices we moms love to pretend they always make.

One of the easy ways to make sure they do this is to take every “bad” choice away. Sounds good, but often I have found that isn’t the best answer either. Everything in moderation. Isn’t that what someone said somewhere?

My business disadvantage may be that I’m really busy in the summer, but my advantage can be my ability to have folks come in and teach classes (teach me) on how to make this a healthier summer for my kids and me.
Tomato Tomäto is going to be teaming up with Live Well Omaha Kids to have some wonderful classes to help you and your family have a healthier, happier summer.

• On Thursday June 13 from 6:30-8:00 we will be having an Intro to Yoga and Spectacular Smoothie class put on by instructor Holly Smith. This is a way to encourage some basic fun exercise with parents and then a short lesson on how to make really healthy smoothies that will taste great as a summer snack or a meal as a family on a hot day.

• On Tuesday July 16th from 6:00-7:30 we will be having a summer snackin’ class with chef Michael. In this class we will explore some delicious ways to snack your way through summer. This is a great class for kids like mine who maybe fend a bit for themselves in the summer. It will teach them how to make good healthy choices that will taste great!
Stop by our store this summer and see all of the fresh, local fruits and vegetables, bison, honey and other products that we sell on behalf of area farmers, ranchers, etc. The food really does taste better, it’s affordable and it helps to know that what you are buying helps support a strong local food shed.

Hope to see you all there!
Jody Fritz
