Summer Traditions

I was born right in the middle of summer, July 3rd. Growing up I hated that my birthday wasn’t during the school year, I thought I missed out on all the fun celebrations in school. As I got older though I began appreciate all the fun things I got to do on my birthday that were special because it was during the summer: pool, fireworks, slip ‘n slides.

One of my most vivid memories, though, is of the special cake my Mom made every year. A sheet cake decorated as the American flag with blueberries and strawberries. I thought that cake was so fun when I was little. Now, I like to think this was my Mom’s way of having a healthy twist at a birthday celebration. I don’t think it actually was a “healthy alternative” – rather just a fun cake. Which is even better! We didn’t even think of it as “healthy” because it was festive and part of our tradition.

This year, I hope everyone will think about healthy options during their summer celebrations. Make these foods or game festive, fun and part of your tradition so it doesn’t even seem like something different.
